The company was founded in 1989 and initially the cultivation of cut flowers and land plants was the main activity. Some time after that, Alkemade started to specialize in making cuttings from perennials and this has been the activity on which we have been fully focused ever since.

Due to the growth of the company, a larger location was bought over time, with which all activities, which were now taking place at several locations, could be combined.
This location was found at Rooversbroekdijk 121a in Lisse; an existing nursery of over 3 hectares in .
After a major internal renovation, the nursery was taken into use by Alkemade in April 2011.

This nursery has a closed cultivation system and is equipped with a lava floor with underfloor heating. All this for the benefit of the quality of the cuttings and the environment.

We work together with various suppliers of unrooted cuttings from several countries. This has the advantage that we are not dependent on the seasons and can produce cuttings all year round.

To ensure that our business process runs smoothly, we have a team of skilled and committed employees at our disposal.

In January 2020 Vitroflora Grupa Producers, belonging to the Vitroflora's group of companies (founded in 1977) in Poland, bought the shares of the then owners, Theo and Wil Alkemade have been our parent company ever since. Just like Alkemade, Vitroflora is still a real family business and has 5^th generation family members in the day-to-day management of the company.

Together, Vitroflora and Alkemade Perennials offer the widest range of perennial plants on the market for professional growers in Europe. In cooperation with the tissue culture laboratory belonging to the Vitroflora Group, our companies supply also high-quality propagation material to the demanding markets of North America, Japan and Australia.
